While many of us have experienced the hottest summers where the sidewalk’s heatwaves could fry an egg in less than a minute, these summers are actually a far cry from record-breaking. Here in the United States there are very few places where temperatures come close to setting world records, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible! In fact, there are a few locations in the United States and around the globe that seem to be in an arms race over who can register the hottest temperatures on earth.

Out of all of the hottest places in the world then, which ones are known for bringing the heat? Grab your sunglasses, lather on the sunscreen and bring plenty of ice-cold water as we start here in the United States and travel through sun, sand and scorching temperatures to visit the top 10 hottest places on earth. After seeing some of these record-breaking heatwaves, you’re sure to think 90 degrees is mild!

#10 – Las Vegas, Nevada

What better way to start our list than by visiting one of the top tourist destinations in the world? With nicknames like “Sin City,” “The City of Lights” and “The Marriage Capital of the World,” the bustling town of Las Vegas, Nevada is the most populated city in the entire state with 603,488 people who call the sprawling basin town “home.” Centered around a four-mile stretch known as the Las Vegas Strip, the town offers gambling, shopping, nightlife and fine dining to over 40 million visitors each year.

Visitors stepping off the plane at the McCarran International Airport might be a bit surprised if their Vegas adventure falls between June and September. A subtropical and hot climate thanks to the Mojave Desert, July is the hottest month with the average temperature sitting at a scorching 104 degrees and the hottest on record set in 1931 at 118! With very little rain to cool things down, the heat doesn’t let up the rest of the year with the average annual temperature staying north of 80 degrees. Ranked as the sixth most populated city in the United States with just under 1.6 million residents, the last 40 years have seen continual growth for the stunning Valley of the Sun as people flock to settle down in a town that boasts over 330 days of sunshine, clear skies, mild winters and some of the longest and hottest summers in the world.

Nestled in the Sonoran Desert, Phoenix residents have no need for jackets as the area sees average lows in the 80s from June to September. July tops the charts as the hottest and wettest month of the year with an average high of 106.1 degrees which was topped in 1995 with a record-breaking 122 degrees. Temperatures throughout the remainder of the year average around 66 degrees in the coldest month of December with only one day where temps drop to or below freezing. And although snow is extremely rare, it isn’t unheard of with the last snow falling in 1998 and melting within minutes, no doubt!

#8 – Kebili, Tunisia

Leaving the United States and traveling abroad, the next hottest city on our list is also the hottest in the country – Kebili, Tunisia. Considered an oasis in the Saharan region, Kebili is home to over 62,000 residents and thousands of tourists each year looking to escape the brutal North African heat under Kebili’s palm trees and at their many resorts. Though with the coldest temperatures averaging at 76 degrees, we can’t imagine this town is much of an oasis at all!

July and August in Kebili are almost unbearable with temperatures averaging between 106 and 107 degrees with lows in the 90s and record highs reaching well beyond 120 degrees. On July 8, 1888, Kebili recorded its hottest temperature at 133 degrees, which has since been met with controversy as a result of modern technology. Regardless, Kebili residents claim the record to be true as their most recent readings skyrocketed to 128 degrees. With little to no rainfall throughout the year, Kebili has only its palm trees and dry wind to offer any sort of relief from the heat.

#7 – Timbuktu, Mali

Rich in history and culture, the Mali town of Timbuktu is the seventh hottest place in the world and is one of the smallest on our list with a population of just over 54,000. Situated in the southern Sahara Desert and north of the Niger River, Timbuktu is surrounded by sand dunes that complement the area’s hot and dry climate. In fact, between the river flooding and the scorching temperatures, Timbuktu was first only inhabited during the cooler months until finally being settled year-round thanks to the growing salt trade and rice farming.

With the winter months of December, January and February seeing temperatures at 86 degrees or higher in addition to dry and dusty desert winds, it’s no surprise that the rest of the year is incredibly hot. May is the most unbearable month as average highs reach 108 degrees with June, July, September and October seeing their fair share of triple digits with most days registering around 98.2 degrees or hotter. Snow, of course, is absolutely unheard of as the lowest temperature on record was a mild 55.4 degrees in January. So what’s the hottest it’s ever been in Timbuktu? A whopping 130 degrees! No thanks!

Coming in at number six and as the smallest city on our list is the Algerian town of Illizi whose population is just over 17,000. Most people, however, only come to Illizi in the cooler months when travel and camping are more bearable.

Winter in Illizi falls in December, January and February with highs in the mid-70s and 80s to lows in the 40s and 50s. Unfortunately, record-high temperatures haven’t been documented for the town but it’s estimated that the city has seen well beyond the 120-degree mark and we don’t doubt it!

#5 – Mecca, Saudi Arabia

If Las Vegas, Nevada is known in the United States as “Sin City” then Mecca, Saudi Arabia is its exact opposite as Islam’s “Holy City.” With a population of roughly two million, Mecca welcomes over 15 million visitors each year as Muslims from around the world make their obligatory pilgrimage to Muhammad’s birthplace and the site of his first revelation of the Quran. Not even the hot desert climate can stop the majority of believers from visiting the holy city and home of the Kabaa.

When she was a mid-career MBA student at the London Business School in 2005, Priya Krishnan was asked to write her own obituary, an unusual assignment by most means. But the assignment inspired her and provided a sturdy foundation for her future business, now India’s largest pre-school and daycare chain, KLAY.

“Most people think of their dream jobs as being the king or queen of the world, heading a big company,” says KLAY Founder and CEO Krishnan. “But eulogies were always about what sort of a person we were, and what mark we made in the world.”

She wanted her mark to be something that was close to home.

A working mother herself, who ran IT Outsourcing firm Mphasis’ European Business prior to launching KLAY, Krishnan says she experienced the challenges of working full-time and taking care of her young children.

“I was like any working mum who goes through the struggle,” she says.

Based on her own experience, Krishnan knew having a child in daycare in London was relatively simple. It was not the case in India. “In India, the options are grandparents or maids,” she says.

However, grandparents are generally unwilling to relocate to where their children live and work – and maids form part of India’s transient informal hired help segment. This means these are difficult options for parents.

And Krishnan saw some other differences in attitude towards daycare, too, between parents in India and in the UK.

“One of the key things – which is especially nuanced here –  is that parents see education as a route to emancipation,” she says. “It’s an investment, people will spend as much as 30% of their paycheck on education.”

For her business plan, Krishnan ensured that education, social and learning development were integral parts at her schools, which cater to children from the age of six months to 10 years.

Since launching in India in 2011, under parent company Founding Years, KLAY has 49 schools across India, with centers launching in Dubai shortly, followed by Singapore.

“Parenting is a lonely journey, there’s no handbook on how it should be done,” says Krishnan. “For migrants, there is no supporting family structure, so we create a sense of community.”

This means her schools need to offer things that western schools wouldn’t. They invite experts to help parents understand parenting and nutrition. Parents get advice on when to potty train a child and how to get through the ‘terrible twos’.
